(Joel) It was back in High School on the first day of Year 11. Katherine was the new girl at school and I remember her beautiful green eyes the first time she said hi to me.
The thing is we didn’t have a lot to do with each other until we finished school and some of our friends set us up together!

(Katherine) Yeah it’s funny how we noticed each other after school and eventually became ‘after high school sweethearts’. We’ve been together for over 8 years now.

(Joel) Katherine had no idea! I’d been planning the ‘proposal night’ for a few weeks. On a Thursday afternoon I drove down to Sydney to surprise her after work. I took her out that night to the Opera House to watch a symphony concert. After the show we went for a stroll by the harbour and I paused to tell her that I hadn’t only brought her there to see the concert. I dropped down to one knee, popped out the ring and asked her to marry
me.

(Katherine) We always knew that we would eventually marry, but when the proposal comes it’s still a shock when it happens! For me it was the perfect proposal, and Joel presented me the most gorgeous ring that he designed and got made for me - of
course I said yes!

We’d been together for so long, so we decided not to wait 12 to 18 months for the big day, and opted instead to have the wedding the following autumn. This gave us roughly 6 months to plan everything. We always knew we wanted to have the wedding in the Blue Mountains because it represented who we were and where we lived. Plus in the future we can always visit the locations again with all those happy memories. The preparation was very busy. We spent many weekends visiting potential venues, and the last place we visited was the one we chose, from the very first moment we saw it, we knew it was the one. The setting and views were amazing. The next thing we set out to book was the photographer and after a few searches we met Cindy from Instinctive images. Not only did we feel we clicked straight away with her and her style of work, we also loved the fact she was a local like us!

(Katherine) I only ever had two things in mind for my wedding dress; that it was strapless and in an ivory colour. I found my dress the first time we went shopping, and it was even better than what I was looking for! When I came out to show my mum, sister, cousin and aunty, they all gasped and all got teary eyed. When you get that kind of a personal feeling and reaction from ones close to you, you know it’s the ‘one’.
Apart from the usual hurdles to jump through when planning a wedding, we also had to overcome the drama of Katherine loosing her engagement ring! After a frightful week of
searching everywhere possible, a lovely lady handed it in to us! There really are wonderful people in the world. We took thisas a good omen and continued to punch on with the planning. Throughout the whole planning we never really set out to have a theme in mind for the wedding, we just went for simple and stylish things, like classic old cars and a violin trio. With my beautiful strapless, ivory laced dress and Joel’s suit, by the end of the planning we realised that subconsciously we’d created a simple, yet classic vintage style wedding. Just when we thought that everything had been planned without a problem, the day before the wedding we had a drama with the flowers. Katherine’s sister Eva (maid of honour) was going to make them and when it came time to buy the roses at the flower markets there was hardly any left. Eva still created the most amazing bouquets and they turned out to be even better than the original design! And she’s a nurse!

(Katherine) One of the special additions to the wedding was to have my grandparents fly out from Poland for the occasion. I hadn’t seen them for 20 years, and it was my grandfather’s first time to Australia. I never thought I’d have my grandparents at my wedding so it was very special to us.

In the days leading up to the wedding we had a constant eye on the weather forecast. We wanted the ceremony outside in the beautiful grounds of our chosen venue. On the morning of the wedding there was a massive storm, including hail. By midday the sun was out and there was beautiful blue skies.

(Katherine) We had a few special touches on the day. I had a small locket tucked around my bouquet which had photos of my other grandparents (my dads parents) in Poland. On the drive up to the ceremony I showed my dad the locket and told him I’d made it for the both of us. He squeezed my hand and was all teary eyed. I also gave Joel a lovely old gold pocket watch as my wedding present. Joel also attached a
locket to it with photos of his grandparents now passed on.

(Joel) The ceremony was intimate and special. It was good the day had finally come after so much preparation. Katherine entered the ceremony to the sound of violins as she walked down the stairs towards me. She looked so beautiful and it was a great moment.

(Katherine) The only thing I was worried about was how late I was! Once we arrived, all tension melted away, all I wanted to do was to be with my future husband! After our ceremony the storm decided to return so we waited for the storm to pass, and when it cleared we had photos done at the ceremony venue. We also headed down the road to this one spot where there was a cliff rock and beautiful valley in the background. There we got some amazing photos and we were lucky enough to get a wonderful photo with a rainbow in the background!

(Katherine) The reception was all about having a great time, for us and our guests. Everyone unwound. The entire day was a blur. So much happened. Everyone had told me the day flies by, so we made sure we enjoyed it. We just went along for
the ride – and what a ride
